The Tale of Benjamin Bunny

Benjamin Bunny was a little rabbit. He lived with his father in a wood near a garden.One morning Benjamin met his cousin, Peter Rabbit, sitting alone on a bank.Peter looked sad. He had lost his blue coat and his shoes in Mr. McGregor's garden.

"I know where they are," said Benjamin. "They are on the scarecrow.""Mr. McGregor has driven away for the day," said Benjamin. "Now is a safe time to fetch them."The two little rabbits climbed down a pear tree into the garden.

On the scarecrow they found Peter's coat and shoes, and Peter quickly put them on.Benjamin picked some onions and wrapped them in a little red handkerchief for his aunt.They walked round the garden, but Peter kept stopping to listen. He was afraid.

Suddenly something moved near the wall. It was a big cat!The two rabbits hid under a large basket and kept very still.The cat walked over and sat down on top of the basket.

She stayed there for a long time, and it was dark and hot underneath.At last Benjamin's father came along the top of the wall, looking for his son.He was cross with the cat and chased her right out of the garden.

Then he lifted the basket, let the two rabbits out, and walked them safely home.Peter's mother was so happy to see his coat and shoes again that she forgave him everything.
